<image:title>Heron</image:title>
<image:caption>In photography, sometimes everything goes according to plan, but the image still falls short. Other times, however, the mistakes can lead to something special. That's what happened with this image. I had planned to shoot this scene at sunrise, but the clouds obscured the light and left me disappointed. As I was about to leave, the sun broke through the clouds and lit up the sky. I scrambled to set up my tripod and just as I did, a beautiful blue heron appeared in the shot. It was a reminder that in photography, like in life, the unexpected moments often make the best memories and images.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This location was like stepping onto another planet - the textures, dramatic light, and infinite compositions were a photographer's dream. The lone orange rock perched on top of the ridge immediately caught my eye, with its beautiful color contrast against the steely blue walls of the butte. Despite the constant erosion that created this scene, the rock seemed so permanent.</image:caption>

The way the light played across the surface, highlighting the subtle lines of fallen rocks and emphasizing the natural contours, was a sight to behold. I couldn't help but marvel at the warmth and richness of the light, as it transformed the scene before me into a breathtaking display of natural beauty. Every element of the landscape seemed to work in harmony, creating a sense of unity and serenity that truly captured my imagination. </image:caption>

The resulting image is a true testament to the beauty of nature at its finest. I arrived at the location four hours before sunrise to ensure I had ample time to set up and get the perfect composition. The conditions were simply incredible, with the sun peeking over the mountain peaks and casting a beautiful warm glow on the arch. To top it all off, the moon was visible behind the clouds, adding the perfect touch to this already breathtaking scene. Upon arriving shortly before sunset, I was met with overwhelming crowds and felt disheartened by my poor timing. Deciding to take a break and clear my mind, I took a leisurely walk and stumbled upon a breathtaking scene. The towering sandstone walls were illuminated by the setting sun, casting the area in a soft and serene reflected light. As I framed my shot and clicked the shutter, I was struck by how quickly my surroundings had transformed from chaos to tranquility. <image:caption>I will never forget the moment I captured this image. My last morning on a trip to Iceland. Each of the previous mornings had muted sunsets, snuffed by clouds on the horizon. As my wife and I arrived to this location, I once again thought I would come up empty. However, as we came around the bend, I saw this glorious sunset burning on the horizon. Before the car was even in park, I was off running. With bare feet and my camera in hand, I rushed to the water's edge. The previous day's rain had left a thin layer of water atop the sand, giving a perfect mirror reflection. I barely captured the image before the light started to fade. A truly incredible morning. </image:caption>

 <image:title>Creation</image:title>
<image:caption>I have a passion for photographing sand dunes and have captured them in various locations around the world. However, I have never encountered conditions like I did on this particular day. In just thirty minutes, the sky transformed from clear blue to a sandstorm with winds over 60 miles per hour. As I watched the approaching wall of sand, most people wisely left the dunes. Despite the damage caused to my camera and lenses, I am glad I stayed. I will always cherish the memory of capturing the dunes in the process of being reshaped by the forces of nature. While I have often captured the beauty of sand dunes in my photographs, this particular experience allowed me to document their creation. </image:caption>

 <image:title>Refuge</image:title>
<image:caption>I had long wanted to shoot Caddo lake. After seeing many incredible images from this location, I finally had a chance to see it for myself. Unfortunately, my arrival coincided with an incoming storm. I was devastated when I woke on my first morning in the park, to find the trees completely stripped of foliage. The rust-red leaves now littered every inch of the forest floor. On my final night, some wonderful strangers invited me to a location near their home, that had been sheltered from the storm. I was skeptical, but felt like I had nothing to lose. We arrived just before sunset. I am not sure I have ever set up a tripod so fast. As the last rays of warm light hit this pocket of protected trees, the whole scene felt like a painting. The wind was just strong enough to sway the Spanish Moss, but not enough to disturb the branches and leaves. I used a long shutterspeed, to capture the motion in the moss, embracing the soft, painterly feeling of the scene. I only had time to shoot one composition, before the light faded. I will never forget this evening. Not only for the beauty of the landscape, but for the kindness of strangers, providing my wife and I this incredible memory. </image:caption>

 <image:title>Fall Finale</image:title>
<image:caption>I captured this image as storm clouds grew overhead. The dark blue skies cast the scene in a cool light, contrasting beautifully with the fiery foliage. I did not know it at the time, but this would be my only opportunity to capture this scene. Overnight, torrential rains and high winds stripped these trees of every last bit of color. I returned the next day, to find the leaves strewn about the lake. Moments like this are what make me love photography. Being able to capture, and share, a fleeting moment in time. Had I arrived just 12 hours later, I would only know this scene as grey and lifeless. However, as luck would have it, when I think back to this incredible landscape, it will always look exactly like this.</image:caption>

The composition features a series of rolling sand dunes that fill the frame, each crest casting its own distinct shadow in the cool blue light. The stark contrast between the bright white of the sand and the deep blue shadows creates a serene and peaceful atmosphere. The image almost feels abstract, with the lack of any clear reference points other than the gentle curves of the dunes themselves. Yet, it's precisely this simplicity that draws the viewer in and makes the scene so captivating. The absence of any other elements or colors focuses the viewer's attention entirely on the unique beauty of the sand dunes themselves, and the way the light and shadow play across their contours. </image:caption>

The yucca's spiky leaves stand out in sharp relief against the soft curves of the sand, and the play of light and shadow adds depth and texture to the scene. The minimalistic composition, with its limited color palette of white and blue, creates a serene and tranquil atmosphere, drawing the viewer's gaze to the stark beauty of the landscape. The image is both simple and striking, a celebration of the natural world's quiet elegance. </image:caption>

 <image:title>Reset</image:title>
<image:caption>When I am feeling stuck in my photography, nothing resets me like sand dunes. In the dunes, there is no end goal, no image in mind. I just walk. This is one of those images that doesn't work for everybody. For me, I look at this image and remember exactly how it felt standing there. There are moments in photography, like life, that are fleeting. These moments often leave me feeling rushed, even stressed. This was not one of them. As the light hit this scene, perfectly illuminating the dunes while leaving the mountains cast in shadow, I had enough time to shoot nearly 20 images in a a multirow panorama. The final image, when viewed large (as it is intended to be viewed), transports me back to this beautiful place. Warm sun on my shoulders, a soft breeze and John Denver quietly playing from my headphones. </image:caption>

<image:caption>On a cool fall morning, I arrived to this location more than an hour before sunrise. I was disappointed to find there were no clouds in the sky. However, as the morning sun approached, a light fog grew on the water. While the blue-hour light landed on the peaks, with the subtle pink of the Earth's shadow in the sky, I heard the unmistakable sound of an Elk bugle. I could not believe my luck, as a small herd of elk began crossing the stream. What I had begun the morning thinking would be an uneventful sunrise ended up being one of the most memorable moments I have ever spent behind a camera. </image:caption>

I leaped from the car to capture this image. Within minutes, the rain clouds completely enveloped the scene and even started to rain on me. When I found this reflection in a small section of the lake, protected by a fallen tree, all that was left to do was wait. Unfortunately, as the sun set, clouds on the horizon blocked the light. I was sure what would result was a dull, lifeless sunset. Another failure at Mills.
